MappaMundi

A Film made by Amour Fou and Oikodrom

MappaMundi  explores our vision of the world: for thousands of years it changes, adapts, evolves and recreates — just as earth itself.

MappaMundi   takes you on an accelerated voyage through 950 million years of continental drift and 150.000 years of human migration. The film shows the continuous change of our world, a change that is unnoticable for a human being in a single lifetime.

MappaMundi  is a film about the image of the world that we have been sketched repeatedly anew for thousands of years. With over hundred world maps from the past 15.000 years, the development of our view of the world from its beginnings to this day is critically analysed and illustrated in its diversity.

MappaMundi lets us experience the history of the transformations of Planet Earth and its inhabitants. It makes us aware how much that history relies on the principles of movement, displacement, change, and intermixture, thereby demonstrating the absurdity of current political strategies that aim at fortifying borders and inhibiting migration.

MappaMundi shows the world we inhabit as the result of a process of continuous, radical change, a process of incessant transformation – that is both unstoppable and fascinating.

The Face of the Earth Mirrored in Film Cosmic cartographers measure the surface of planet earth along a time axis which reaches back some hundreds of millions of years in the past, but also looks forward into the future. A critical view on the world and the world view of its history as a fast track travel, through milleniums.

The creation of the world did not happen in the beginning,
it happens every day.
(Marcel Proust)

We do not need other worlds,
we need mirrors.
(Stanislaw Lem, Solaris”)
