The concept of poverty is intrinsically a philosophical issue that calls for methodological choices. The Nopoor project considers that poverty is a dynamic, multidimensional phenomenon that calls for dynamic assessment at individual level. Progress towards a theory of poverty needs to be empirically founded by quantitative and qualitative studies in Southern and northern relevant partner countries: the comparative approach gives rise to a better understanding of idiosyncratic and universal determinants of poverty.
The Oikodrom research tasks in nopoor consist in participatory research about theory and practice of poverty alleviation projects in selected field studies, emphasising on empowerment and capacity building approaches in poverty alleviation projects.
We also lead the dissemination processes, in particular the knowledge transfer between scientists, policy makers and the media, on a national as well as on an international level. Heidi Dumreicher together with Xavier Oudin is the editor of the booklet “nopoor” in a publication format going beyond the academic realm. This project collects a multitude of original data at the grassroots level together with its different partners.
nopoor also helps improving the qualitative and quantitative collection methods developed in a partnership with the statistics institutes in the different Southern countries. Through policy briefs and public conferences, nopoor provides politicians with new analyses and a greater understanding of the areas in which they could make a difference, giving them insight how to implement more effective policies. In this respect, nopoor develops comparative studies with a particular focus on the conditions for successful poverty-reduction policies in selected countries and how to tailor them to other countries, actively disseminating the research findings locally and worldwide.

Synopsis Die Ungleichheit steigt weltweit. Die Schere zwischen arm und reich gerät ausser Kontrolle. 62 Menschen auf der Welt besitzen so viel wie die Hälfte der Erdbevölkerung. Extreme Ungleichheit produziert Probleme im sozialen und gesundheitllichen Bereich, sie hält manche Familien über Generationen hinweg in der Armut fest, während andere Jahr für Jahr ihre Priviliegien erhalten können, und führt zu gewalttätigen Konflikten. Diese Folgen spüren wir alle, doch am härtesten treffen sie jene Menschen in Asien, Afrika und Latein Amerika, die von Amut am stärksten betroffen sind. Gleichzeitig gibt es Raum für Hoffnung. Wenn Armut weiter in der gleichen Geschwindigkeit bekämpft wird wie in den letzten Jahren, könnte im Jahr 2025 die extreme Armut aus der Welt verschwunden sein. Ein Menscheitstraum liegt in unserer Reichweite. Im Mittelpunkt der Nopoor Diaries steht die Frage: Was kann Millionen Menschen auf der Welt, die in Armut leben, wirklich Erleichterumng verschaffen? Ist es eine Frage von Ressourcen? Politischem Willen? Den richtigen Rahmenbedingungen? Wie sieht die Zukunft aus? Und kann der Wissenschaft ein Brückenschlag zur wirklichen Welt gelingen?
